This is the most realistic and genuinely entertaining movie I have ever seen. While Greta Gerwig's Lady Bird is her own original, this adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's famous American novel affected me almost as much as her first movie. She somehow makes this version of Little Women her own by focusing on different people and events in the story compared to its predecessors. This 2019 adaptation shows more character development rather than a simple romance between Jo and Laurie. Greta Gerwig takes apart the whole chronological structure of the story and replaces it with shifts from past to present to create logical theme points. I think that this empowering story of a group of women needs to be seen by everyone in the world today, specifically because of some recent events. (the certain someone who is the Commander in Chief right now)

I do admit that I was really hyped to see this movie because some of my favorite actors and actresses were in it. I am a really big fan of Timothée Chalamet, who plays Laurie, and Saoirse Ronan, who plays Jo, mainly because of Gerwig's Lady Bird. I had read the children's shortened version in third grade and I decided to read the actual book after I saw this movie two days after its release (on Timothée's birthday, the 27th of December). Even though I loved those actors, I left the theater praising Florence Pugh who plays Amy March. Amy is known for being the spoiled, bratty youngest March sister who burns Jo's manuscript. Greta Gerwig has changed one of the most hated characters in literature and given her justice. We see a different side of Amy because of the directors adapted screenplay and Florence Pugh's outstanding performance!

My friends are probably annoyed at how many times I've talked about this movie (except Sophia and Simone). I have an older sister, and Little Women perfectly encapsulates the love and hatred felt for each other. Great is honestly selling it short. Watching this movie has made me feel so many emotions. My favorite film critic, Karsten Runquist, says it perfectly. "The big stupid grin I had on my face for basically the entire first half hour. I noticed it and was like 'oh wow I should not be smiling this hard I look weird' and 5 seconds later went back to smiling. The love and care that is oozing out of this film gives it this dreamlike feeling..." (from Letterboxd).

I want this on DVD so I can watch it over and over when I feel down. Hopefully the experience is just as magical when I watch as an adult.

I loved loved loved Little Women!

5/5
