this movie is the perfect example of a romance movie that isn't a romance movie. it points out overused clichés and the realistic realities of love, with the help of the infamous expectation vs. reality scene. at first viewing, I was unsatisfied with the ending. I, the hopeless romantic, was upset that Summer didn't end up with Tom. but upon multiple viewings, I finally realized my mistake. there are people in your life that will come and go, but they changed you and your outlook on life. without people like Summer in Tom's life, and vice versa, the two of them couldn't have grown as separate humans. also, Tom had been projecting his idea of "the perfect girl" onto Summer even though that wasn't who she was. the nice guy doesn't always win. especially when he really isn't the nice guy.

I love how they made Summer wear blue to complement her eyes while Tom was falling in love with the girl of his dreams, not Summer. the seasons corresponded with the way he was feeling and eventually lead to the rebirth of his new love-interest, Autumn. however, I'm torn because I don't know whether or not Summer is a Manic Pixie Dream Girl. sadly in Tom's perspective, she only seems to be in the movie to help him develop as a person. if this is the case, I don't really like this movie at all. but some analysts are saying otherwise... moral of the story, I don't know how I feel about 500 Days of Summer.
