Dr. Miles Bennell is held in custody in a police office and a psychiatrist is called down to help. He is asked to repeat the story of what happened to him to the other men. It flashbacks to the beginning of the story when Miles is called by his secretary to come back into town. In Santa Mira, there have been many cases of patients who believe that their relatives and friends are not really themselves. A boy runs for his life away from his mother who he thinks has been replaced with an alternative person. There are multiple cases of the same event, family being replaces with impostors, but a day after they call for help, they all decide otherwise and pretend it never happened. Miles Bennell runs into Becky Driscoll, his former girlfriend. Becky’s cousin also believes that her uncle has been replaced. When they arrive, they notice that there is no physical difference in their appearance but the people who are close to them find a mental difference. That night, Miles’s friend, Jack, finds an undeveloped body in his closet and calls Miles. The body shares uncanny similarities to Jack’s face and body. Jack cuts his hand with a glass bottle and his wife later sees a cut form on the body’s hand. Miles tells Dr. Kauffman, another psychiatrist, to come over. Miles finds another body in Becky’s basement that resembles her face. When the doctor arrives, the bodies are gone, and he doesn’t believe them. Jack, Jack’s wife, Miles, and Becky gather at one of their homes to have a meal and talk about the mass hysteria. Then, they find all their duplicates in the greenhouse. They realize that everyone is being replaced while they sleep into emotionless impostors. Miles attempts to call the authorities, but the lines are busy. They urge Jack and his wife to leave town and get help. While the others are gone, Miles and Becky realize that it is too late and that the whole town of Santa Mira has been replaced. In order to avoid being replaced, they try to stay awake. The next morning, they see giant seed pods in the town center being handed out to the civilians. The impostors are going to take them to other towns and replace everyone. Two aliens explain that the world is better with no love and emotion. Miles and Becky pretend to be emotionless but Becky screams when a dog almost gets killed. They escape the pod people by running into the mountains and Becky is fighting to stay awake. They hear music so Miles leaves to see what it is and when he returns, he sees that Becky has slept. Miles runs away from everyone, eventually reaching the highway. The flashback ends, and no one in the police office believes his story. However, an injured person is brought in and they say that his truck was filled with weird pods. They all believe Miles and they call for help.
